old stuff

I was going through some old backup files on a CD, and I found bunch of nice pictures I took long time ago. I was surprised how sharp and rich in color those are. Those were taken mostly with my old Nikon point-and-shoot. (CoolPix S1, to be exact.)

昔CDに入れたバックアップのファイルを探していたら、その当時撮った写真がいっぱい出てきました。

DSLRに比べて機能もセンサーも桁違いなのに、コンパクトなデジカメで撮った写真の鮮明さと色の深みに今更ながら感心してしまいました。

I went to midtown today. It's been a while.

I hate the crowd, so I try not to go that area as much as I can. But I don't have to, actually.

Even with the crowd and everything, the sky was so blue today, and everything looked crisp.

久しぶりにミッドタウンに行ってきました。

とにかく混み合っているところが嫌いなので、なるべく行かないようにしているのですが、その前にあんまり行く必要もないです。田舎者体質なのかもしれません。

それでも今日は空がすごく青かったです。

I have a class until 9:30pm on Fridays, and it was sort of depressing to see it darkens outside the window a couple of months ago, but now I can see the day is getting longer.

Trees and flowers are all singing.

毎週金曜日は夜の９時半までクラスがあります。いつも窓の外が暗くなっていくのを見ながら「早く帰りたい〜」とか思っていたのですが、最近は暗くなるのもずいぶん遅くなってきて、明らかに日が長くなりました。福岡に比べるとNYは緯度が高いせいか、日が長くなっていくのがはっきりわかるような気がします。

ルームメイトにあのメロンが爆弾みたいだと言ったら、今日冷蔵庫を開けると起爆性のメロンがありました。

ipod touch touch

While iPad doesn't really attract me at this point, I'm so happy with my new iPod Touch arrived today. (ordered from Apple Refurbished store, so I saved some bucks.)

I still love my "vintage" Shuffle, since it can be hung from my neck. It's so light and can go straight to the USB port. I guess nobody wants it, so I don't worry about getting it stolen.

Anyways, I'm now crazy about all the "apps", and they are so much fun. What I like so much about it is that I can check my several different emails at once with the Mail app.

今の段階ではまだiPadに魅力は感じないのですが、今日届いたiPod Touchにはかなり盛り上がっています。

アップルのリファービッシュストアで注文したので、定価より若干安めに買えたのですが、パッケージからなにから新品同様でした。

今まで使っていた、すでにビンテージに近いシャッフルもまだ気に入っています。軽いし、首にかけられるし、古すぎて多分盗まれることもないところがいいのです。

インターネットに接続できるのはもちろん、ダウンロードできるアプリケーションもけっこう充実していて、かなり遊べます。メールのアプリケーションは複数のメールのアカウントを一度にチェックできるので超便利です。なぜかホットメールだけパソコンで見るものと連動していないのですが、やっぱりスティーブはビルが嫌いなんでしょうか。

dog in the backyard

It's been very nice and warm, and I've left the window open all day. And I heard dog whining somewhere outside the window. I looked out, and there was a dog in the backyard of the building two doors down on the other side of our building. He looked pretty energetic, but he was there until late night. He kept whining, barking, and scratching the window, obviously trying to get inside. He was desperate to get attention. The backyard is full of junk.

The next day, the dog was still there. I'm not sure if he got inside at night because his whining stopped at some point very late, but in the morning, it's the same thing. I became worried. It's nice outside, but I wondered if he's getting food or water. He was barking and whining all day and night. At night, I could see the light on inside, and people were there.

I called my roommate and she said I should call 311. So I called them at around 10 pm. They were polite enough but told me to call ASPCA for animal cruelty in the morning because it was too late. The dog was still there, so I called 911. They were polite enough, too, but they didn't do anything, for the dog was still there next morning.

I called ASPCA and explained the situation. What they said was that they can't do anything either because it's not raining or cold, and I didn't spot anything the dog's owner abusing or neglecting him.

...Alright.

I called 311 again, and reported animal cruelty and noise complain. They asked me where I am and the address of the building where the dog is, and said they would send letters to the owner and me. A letter.. ok.

The dog is still there. He stopped barking and whining somehow, and it hasn't rained since I first found him, but I don't think it's right.

最近はとても天気が良くて暖かいので、一日中窓を開けっ放しにしていることが多いのですが、そのために外の喧噪などが聞こえてきて、うちの反対側で２件隣のビルのバックヤードに見たことのない犬がいることがわかりました。そこはゴミでいっぱいです。

その子は一日中外にいて、絶えず吠えたりキュンキュン泣いたりして、時々窓を必死に引っ掻いて中に入ろうとしているのです。健康そうだし、元気いっぱいな感じなのですが、夜遅くなっても泣き止みません。

いつしか泣き声は聞こえなくなってので、夜遅く誰かが入れたのがはわかりませんが、次の朝、その犬はまだそこにいました。昨日と同じです。夜になっても泣き止みません。ルームメイトを呼んで窓の外を見せると、３１１に電話するように言うので、夜１０時頃電話しました。状況を説明すると、動物虐待の件で朝ASPCAに電話してくださいと言うので、しかたなく電話を切りました。でもまだ犬はそこにいて、きゅんきゅん言っています。なので警察に電話することにしました。住所を言って、とりあえず誰かそこのドアをノックして犬を入れてください、と言ったのですが、やはり彼らも何もしませんでした。

次の日、ASPCAに電話して、同じように状況を説明すると、彼らの言うことには、虐待が明らかだとか、雨が降っていたり、すごく寒かったりする以外は、なにもできないというのです。

結局、３回電話してなにも状況は変わりません。もう一度３１１に電話して、再び状況を説明して、いろんなところに電話してまた電話していることも説明すると、住所がわかれば１週間以内にそことこっちに告示を送るというので、うちの住所と犬のいるところの住所を言って、電話を切りました。手紙‥。

犬はまだそこにいます。なぜか、吠えたり泣いたりするのは止みました。あれから雨も降ってませんが、なんか腑に落ちないのです‥。

april fool - goole's prank

Yes, it was April Fool. I happened to look up some address on Goole Map, and noticed that there was something new on street view. I clicked on it. The red and blue thingy you know it's 3D which requires that red and blue glasses to see it pop out. What the heck? Um.. it's kinda stupid.

Besides the Topeka thing, it was Google's another hoax on April Fool's day.

Next year, do it hologram, Google. That I wanna see.

そういえば、今日はエイプリルフールでした。

たまたまある住所をグーグルマップで調べていて、なんか見たことないものがストリートビューに。クリックすると、赤と青のあの「飛び出す絵本」ものが。なにこれ。意味ない〜。

トペカに加えてこれはグーグルのもうひとつのエイプリルフールのジョークだったのでした。

来年は、ホログラムしてね、グーグル。それならすごく見てみたい。
