I will never get bored of doing digital, but I've always thought I should do film photography at some point. Doing film is a luxury nowadays, and you can't check every time you take a picture. But that's the point. Aperture + shutter speed is what you need to know to control lighting. Because lighting is EVERYTHING. (at least to me.) The more money you spend, the better your photography becomes, because you'll be more attentive!

I knew that my uncle was into photography and almost all my (good) baby pictures are taken by him. So I wondered if he was generous to give me (or let me use) his camera because I was 100% sure he doesn't use it anymore. I asked my mom. She instead asked my grandpa, whom I never had an idea of connecting photography to. His only hobby is fishing. But it turned out that he had a very old canon from the 60's. OH MY GOD. So he said yes to give it to me, and I received it the other day.

It was Canonflex R2000. I had no idea about it and so I did some research.

It was made in 1960, only 8,800 in production (probably it was not so popular since Nikon released a legendary F series a few years earlier), and it's definitely a collector's item.

...Should I use it or... Of course I should.

This camera is beautiful. It's heavy and very sturdy and oh, the look. I love the typeface on the front. So nice and retro.

It came with a beautiful analog light meter in a separate leather case. The cases are also nice, of course, one of which with velvet lining inside. And the lens! I didn't ask her about the lens, knowing she had no idea about it, but very fortunately, it came with my favorite kind of lens - a fixed 50mm.

It will be a luxurious moment. The shutter sound, view from the finder, plus the memories from the good ol' days even before I was born.

デジタルは一生やめることはないと思いますが、いつも思っていたのはいつかフィルムをしないといけないなということでした。今でこそ贅沢な趣味になったフィルム写真、現像その他お金がかかるし、撮るたびに写真をチェックできないし、無駄も多いのです‥。が、そこがポイントで、光をコントロールするのにはレンズの絞りとシャッタースピードがすべてで、お金をかけて一枚一枚実験的に学ぶのはデジタルにも当然反映されるのです。ただフィルムにはフィルムにしか出せない良さがあるのは確かです。

叔父さんが、昔写真にハマっていたのは知っていて、私の（良い）赤ちゃん写真はほとんど彼によるものです。なので、もう使っていないだろうと思われるそのカメラ、もしかしたら譲ってくれるかも（！）と期待しつつ、母に聞いてみました。母は、なぜか代わりにじいちゃんに聞いたらしく、すると、なんとじいちゃんがいいカメラを持っているというので、、、（ふたりともじいちゃんがカメラ？？？な反応でした。彼の唯一の趣味は釣りなので。）ありがたくもじいちゃんのカメラが送られてきました。

母いわく、それは４０年前のカメラで珍しいものだというので、（母がカメラに詳しくないのを知っていたので）いろいろ聞かずに待っていました。開けてみるとそれはCanonflex R2000というものでした。調べてみると、それは１９６０年に８８００機だけ作られたカメラで、（先立ってニコンが大人気のFシリーズを出した後だったので人気がなかったのかもしれません）間違いなくコレクターアイテムです。

もちろん売ることは考えませんでしたが、とにかくこれは美しいカメラなのです。じいちゃんのカメラ。

フロントのCanonのレトロな印字とか、けっこうなどっしり感、シンプルな外観がデザイン性にも優れています。一緒についてきたアナログの露出計がこれまたレトロで、別のレザーケースに入っていました。カメラケースもヴェルベットのライニングがついていて、ビンテージの匂いが漂いまくりです。

まだ実際にフィルムを入れて写真を撮っていませんが、それはもう贅沢な瞬間になることは間違いなしで‥。シャッターの下りる音やファインダーから見える景色、加えて私の生まれる前からの歴史が刻まれた重みが‥　重みがっ。

The Fall

I've been into "collecting" movies lately. I'm sort of a professional in stocking things up.. like beads, buttons, fabric, visual reference, whatever I like. And now those movies are becoming another library.

One of those I wanted to watch was The Fall (2006), which was not so much acknowledged, I guess. Well, often times it's not about popularity when it comes to a"good" film.

The first thing about this movie is its cinematography. It's just so exquisite. It looks like all about good photography from the first frame. The gorgeous colors and brightness,, it makes sense to me that the movie was directed by an Indian director, Tarsem Singh. The original story was based on some Bulgarian film in 1981.

The clips from the real stunt movies in the 20's at the end are also amazing. Crazy stunts for just a second in the films - incredibly hard work to make good stuff. Everything was (almost) real and original back then. There is an irony that it needed so much energy and work to make a fiction. And that was the Hollywood.

最近、映画をダウンロードするのにハマっていて、観たかった映画や持っていたい映画などを次々にダウンロードして、いつでも観れるように、、、といってもけっこう集めるのが趣味っぽい私にはそればっかりのような気もしますが。

そのなかで観た映画、The Fall（邦題：落下の王国）は、何度でも観たい映画でした。２００６年の映画なんですが、おそらくあまり有名でなかったのかも。ま、「いい映画」というのはしばしば人気や知名度に拠らないものですが。

とにかく、シネマトグラフィー（映像演出）が素晴らしいです。最初のフレームから「良い写真」のような構成で、鮮やかな色彩や壮大さが、宝石のようです。インド人の監督ターセム・シンが撮ったというのはかなり納得の出来なのでした。もともとのストーリーは１９８１年のあるブルガリアの映画が元になっているそうです。

summer sewing

Summer is a good season for sewing. I like staying in a nice and cool air-donditioned room and working on projects. Beaches are not for me in the midst of summer.. it's disgusting. (I'm talking about Coney Island.) It's such a delight, free from school work and do whatever I was dreaming to do after countless sleepless nights and headache.

I made a bunch of dresses, shirts, skirts, and other stuff.

When my mom came, she mentioned about the silk fabric her boyfriend brought her from China, and so I made a dress with it, too. I have made clothes only for myself so far, but it was a nice feeling to make it for someone else.

夏は服作りの季節です。暑いなか出て行くよりも、クーラーの効いた部屋でせっせと布を広げてミシンに向かうのが喜びなのです‥。（特に真夏のビーチは気持ち悪いので、、。）学校の課題に追われて頭痛と睡眠不足気味の日々のあとは楽しみも倍増！

ワンピースやシャツ、スカートなどいっぱい作りました。もしかしたら来年の夏はこんなことできないかもしれないと思うと、気付いたら３日外に出ないってことになってたりもして。

母が来たときに、もらいもののシルクの生地のことを言っていて、日本に帰ってから送ってもらったので、それで母にワンピースを作ったりもしました。いままで自分の服ばかり作っていたので、自分以外のひとに服を作るのもなかなかいいものでした。

syracuse - the end of summer

Don and his kids go to Syracuse (upstate NY) every summer and Christmas to see his parents, and this is my second time going up there with them. Everything is so nice and I'm excited to go there each time.

It takes almost a day to get there from NYC, but all the more, I feel I'm going for vacation.

We stayed there for about a week. This summer, we didn't do much and were just hanging out around the house. And that's kinda things I would like to do..

Me and Don went on a hike into the woods behind the house, and there was a beautiful lake we could explore around on a canoe. It was so quite, and just breathtaking...

毎年、夏とクリスマスには彼と子供たちがNYの上の方にあるシラキュースというところに彼の両親に会いに行くのですが、夏に私がついていくのは２度目になります。普段の生活から離れたところに行くのは毎回楽しみで、食べ物からなにからすべてが新鮮です。ニューヨークからはほとんど一日がかりで行くのですが、それもまた私的にバケーション気分プラスなのでよいのです。

１週間ほどいて、これといって特別なにをしたわけではないんですが、かなりリラックスできたバケーションなのでした。家自体が丘の上にあるのですが、毎日、シカが前の野原を横切るのが見えます。その裏にまたちょっとした森があって、ときどきそのなかにハイクしに行ったりしました。その森の奥には小さな湖があって、カヌーに乗って湖の奥までいくと、あり得ない静けさで、心が癒されるのでした。自然は芸術です‥。

sonic youth at prospect park

Celebrate Brooklyn is one of the best events in New York held every summer. Most of the shows are free, and they are inviting more and more really good bands and musicians every year.

Sonic Youth was to play this year, and I had pinned the date since I found it out. I'd never seen them on stage before. And they were good! I'm short, so my problem as always is that I have to find a spot I can climb on to see them. So I stuck to the dividing fence by the technician booth. It worked.

毎年夏になるとNYでは至る所でフリーコンサートなどのイベントが目白押しになるのですが、Celebrate Brooklynもそのひとつで、６月から８月にかけていろんなバンドやミュージシャンのコンサートがブルックリンのプロスペクトパークで行われます。ここ最近ではけっこう人気のあるバンドなどが呼ばれて、毎年大きくなっているイベントなのです。

去年はトーキングヘッズのデヴィッドバーンを見に行ったのですが、始まるずいぶん前から会場に長い長い長い列ができていて、結局入ることができませんでした。

今年もいろいろと見たいバンドがあったのですが、ソニックユースは見たかったので、前々から日にちを確保しておきました。

背が低いので、どこに行くにも場所確保が課題なのですが、今回は、テクニシャンブースの横のフェンスから離れず、混んできたらフェンスに上れるようにしておきました‥。
