bauhaus - moma

1/18, I went to MoMA. There were two interesting exhibitions: Tim Burton's and Bauhaus.
I wasn't crazy about Bauhaus, although you can't ignore it in any field of design, but I was really impressed when I saw a chair made in 1926 in the show. It is genius.

It looked like this.

In 1926. It makes all those what they call minimalist designs look bogus.
American architect Louis Sullivan said "Form follows function", and it seems that his philosophy comes from this.


MoMAに行きました。今ちょうど面白いエキシビションを２つやっていて、そのひとつがバウハウスでした。
デザインをかじるものとしては無視して通れないバウハウスですが、個人的には信仰するほど好きなわけではありません。しかし、そのなかで１９２６年製のこんな感じの椅子を見たときは、神の啓示を受けました。

すごいです。１９２６年にこんなものができたなんて。アメリカ人の建築家ルイス・サリヴァンはかつて"Form follows function"（形は機能に従う）という名言を残しましたが、この椅子を見るとそれがここに由来するような気がして、いまよく見るいわゆるミニマリストのデザインが、とても安っぽく見えます。なんの思想もないデザインは、ただのコピーです。

他にもモホリ・ナギの写真などもあって、計算された構成の写真はときに息がつまりそうでしたが、バウハウスはとにかく頭脳のデザインなのでした。
